Fluvoxamine is an SSRI antidepressant. It is prescribed for obsessive-compulsive disorder and major depression (AEMPS Ficha Técnica). In 2021-2022, fluvoxamine was actively promoted for treatment and prevention of mild COVID-19 as a sigma-1 agonist with anti-inflammatory action in biohacker and alt circles, citing the TOGETHER trial (Reis 2021) with Brazilian participants and placebo control. Living Guideline 2023 and NIH COVID-19 Guidelines 2024 do not recommend fluvoxamine for COVID-19 – the evidence base is limited to one trial with methodological constraints. The drug has standard antidepressant risks: nausea, sexual dysfunction, discontinuation syndrome, and serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs. If fluvoxamine was prescribed for colds or COVID-19 without confirmed depression or OCD, consider seeking a second opinion.
